I have to admit a bias here - I have known Rathmullan House since I was a child and have very, very fond memories of it, but unlike many times when when returning to a favourite childhood place brings disappointment, Rathmullan continues to delight on every visit.

This is a very large and grand house, with elegant public rooms, atiques all around and a beautiful situation on the shores of Lough Swilly. Although the surroundings are as luxurious as any you will find in a formal place, the general mood here is relaxed, with very friendly staff providing excellent service without fuss or pomp.

All the bedrooms are individually decorated, some in a country house style others in Shaker style or using William Morris patterns and syles. All have fine bathrooms, some with free standing tubs.

While bedrooms in the new wing are larger, the ones in the old house are quirkier in shape and style and, in my opinion, nicer.

The menu in the Weeping Elm restaurant concentrates on local produce, with fresh fish and lamb to the fore, resulting in very, very good food.

A less expensive but still very good menu is available in the Celler Bar and snacks and light meals are served in Batt's Bar. Breakfast is a veritable feast, with smoked salmon, roast ham, freshly baked bread and home made jams available as well as a wide choice of cooked options.

All of this in a stunningly lovely part of Ireland. What more could you want?
