Straffan, Co Kildare

You pretty much need to be either rich or celebrating something very special to stay here - it is expensive, but is also probably the best hotel in Ireland and among the best anywhere in the world.

You get the feeling you are are somewhere really special the moment you start the long impressive drive up to the house, it is intensified when you walk into the stunning reception area and by the time you reach your room you realise you are truely in hotel heaven.

Each of the huge bedrooms and suites are individually designed, with interesting antiques and paintings, rich and expensive fabrics and an attention to detail that borders on the obsessive but results in a room to remember and dream about. No matter what room you are in, it is perfect.

You may not want to leave your room at all, but there is is much to tempt you out. The golf of course, on either the Arnold Palmer course which hosted the Rydre Cup or the equally excellent Smurfit course you can be assured of a challenging game as well as wonderful surroundings and facilities.

Other on-site amenities include beautiful gardens and walks through the woods and along the river, a large swimming pool, tennis courts, horse-riding, cycling, snooker and fishing, with the assistance of an expert and very affable ghillie.

In the main restaurant, the Bryerly Turk, gleaming crystal and silver, crisp white linen and marble columns are the backdrop to an evening of fabulous food, maybe not quite Michelen star but pretty close. There are less formal restaurants in the clubhouse of each golf course.

In spite of all this opulence there is a very unstuffy athmosphere at the K Club, the service is excellent, but relaxed and friendly and all the staff seem to magically know your name as soon as you arrive - they make you feel like you are their most important guest and that nothing would be too much trouble.

It is a real experience to stay here, it's special and for most people is not the sort of place they would stay on a regular basis. But I have yet to hear anyone say that it was not worth every cent it cost.
