Glendalough, Co Wicklow
A terrific location close to Glendalough in Co Wicklow and a very good value place to stay. It's name refers not to its age but to its style - with beams and roughened white walls in evidence thoughout - as this is a modern purpose built premises. The result is near hotel standards of accommodation at far from hotel prices.
The bedrooms, indeed all guest areas, are larger than those in the average B&B, with good facilites and excellent en suite bathrooms. Breakfast is served in a large and bright dining room and includes some imaginative menu choices with the excellent bread and the fresh fruit selection particularly impressive.
As you might expect given its location, there is a magnificent garden with the backdrop of the Wicklow mountains and a terrace beside the Avonmore River which flows past the house.
While Dublin is advertised as being only an hour away it would be nigh impossible given average traffic conditions to actually drive to the city centre in that time, so it is not suitable as accommodation for a Dublin visit. It is however a perfect spot for anyone who wants to take the time to explore the Wicklow area on foot or by bike but with real comfort to return to each evening.
