Many of Ireland's ample stock of large castles and country houses have been restored, converted and often extended to provide hotel accommodation of a similar standard to 4 or 5 star hotels, but with much more interesting bedrooms and surroundings.

These are wonderful places to stay, redolent with history and generally with excellent service and with grounds that are as extensive and beautiful as the buildings. Many have excellent leisure facilities, with golf courses, angling, horse riding and other outdoor pursuits available to guests.

History and luxury come at a price and staying in the best Irish Castle accommodation throughout a vacation in Ireland is the preserve of the rich. Many visitors chose to splash out on just one or two nights in this type of accommodation as a special treat.

Expect to pay between €150 to €600 in the best of the Castle hotels, but there are others which are much more affordable - you will be able to stay in a castle for as little as €70-90.
