The GAA and the All Ireland Championship

Every county in Ireland has its own colours, proudly waved and worn by team supporters during the annual GAA All Ireland Championships.

They have nicknames and county songs too – and all of them are listed here.

Gaelic Football

Gaelic Football

Probably the most popular field game in Ireland, Gaelic football is an amateur sport played in almost all counties. County teams attract fanatical support and county players are local heros.

It’s a tough sport played at furious pace in which the ball can be both kicked or punched, or even, briefly, carried, in an effort to get it into or over the opposing team’s goal.

Camogie

Camogie

Camogie is a women’s amateur team game played at a very fast pace with a hurley and a ball, very much like the traditional sport of hurling.

While camogie matches do not attract the huge crowds that hurling does, the game is popular and is played in many schools.
