The most famous of these is of course Bailey's, and many would argue it is the best. But there are lots of others available too.
The popularity of Irish Cream liqueurs has been a great boon to the beleaguered Irish dairy farmer, providing a new market and a large one at that. All Irish made liqueurs are use milk produced by Irish cows, who have been grazed outdoors on grass for most of their lives and have never received any artificial hormone treatments.
This may sound trivial, but it isn't - lots of the cheaper 'Irish style' or 'traditional' liqueurs on the market do not use ingredients of such high quality and frankly, it shows.
A good cream liqueur is smooth and rich without being cloying or overly sweet. The whiskey should not be sharp or harsh, but provide a peaty contrast to the flavour of the cream.
And it is always whiskey.
Cordials & Liqueurs
Just a quick comment on the word "cordial". It seems in the USA this is more or less interchangeable with "liqueur". Here it is not - a cordial is a non-alcoholic, usually fruit flavoured, liquid which is mixed with water before drinking.
Should You Buy Irish Cream in Ireland?
Almost certainly not, unless of course you want to drink it while you are here - or you live here! Because of the exorbitant duty on alcohol in Ireland you will probably be able to buy it at a better price at home, wherever that may be.In a supermarket in Ireland, certainly the cheapest place to buy, you could expect to pay about €25-27 per litre for Baileys Irish Cream, about 30% more than in the USA.
Anyway lugging heavy bottles home is no fun and if they break in your luggage...... ugh!
Irish Cream Truffles
If you like Irish Cream Truffles, the place to buy them online is at ChocAid, who produce really yummy ones using FairTrade chocolate and make a generous donation towards a hunger relief project for each purchase.
