Killarney and the Ring of Kerry
Killarney is not all bad, bit it isn't all good either; it has some good hotels and shops and is pretty conveniently located for touring the Kerry area. That said it is a town practiced in the art of parting tourists and their money and there are too many places selling overpriced rubbish and too many of the hotels, Bed & Breakfasts and restaurants charge an inflated price with only a token nod towards providing real quality.
It has imporved in recent years and made an attempt to clean up some of the worst aspects of rip-off tourism. To some extent it has succeded, but it is still far from being the star in the admittedly glittering Kerry firmament. There are much nicer towns to stay in in the region, Kenmare being our favourite.
The Ring of Kerry is undoubtedly beautiful but in high season getting around it means a slow crawl in heavy traffic with head to toe tour busses practically the full length of the trip.
The stopping points, where it is suggested you stand and marvel at the extraordinary views, are anything but peaceful, with hundreds of camera toting tourists milling about and the ever present stores eager to snare the unwary in to buying stuff they really don't want.
Should you go?
Yes, you should definitely think about including the Ring of Kerry in your tour, especially if you have not been before. But do try as hard as you can to go off-season, or at least on a quieter day (Tuesday and Wednesday).
If the crowds put you off, the Ring of Beara (the next peninsula down) is much quiter, because tour buses cannot negotiate the narrow winding roads, and has wonderful scenery and lovely towns and villages. It is highly recommended.
