Temple Bar, Dublin
This was a great idea - take a run down part of central Dublin, already filling with artist's studios and offbeat shops due to low rental costs - and redevelop it as a sort of 'left bank' with trendy pubs and restaurants, interestingly designed apartment buildings and niche art centres. It even worked for a while.
Now it is virtually a no-go area at night due to the proliferation of late night bars and clubs resulting in streets heaving with rowdy revelers and, most noticeably, raucous hen and stag parties.
Frankly it doesn't feel all that safe at night and during the day different dangers lurk in the mostly ordinary but overpriced shops, pubs and restaurants.
Should you go?
During the day Temple Bar is a very pleasant area to stroll around and has some good shops and place to eat, albeit somewhat overpriced ones.
If wild nightlife is what you are after, this may be just the place for you. Dive in! But do take the normal precautions that would be advised for any city centre area with a lot of drunk people about.
Otherwise, avoid like the plague at nighttime, especially at weekends, but stroll the streets during the day instead.
