Touring Ireland by Bike
Ireland is for the most part a flat country and suited to cyclists of all levels, though there are plenty of routes with climbs that will both challenge and reward the more athletic biker - the spectacular views from the top will be ample reward for your exertions.
Organised tours that move your luggage by van are handy. However you won't be going that far most days and you will find that many B&B and guesthouse owners will be happy to shift it to your next stop for you if you ask nicely.
It is a good plan to take your bike on the train when moving between locations in Ireland, for example from the East to the West or South-West, rather than wasting time and effort cycling on very busy and uninteresting roads.
Bicycle Rental in Ireland
Expect to pay €60-€90 per week for a good mountain bike kitted out for touring. Many rental agents will allow one-way hire for an extra fee but be sure to check this in advance. Panniers can be hired for about €10 extra.

Tips for Cycling in Ireland
- Cycle on the left, cycle on the left, cycle on the left!!!!
- Wear a helmet - it's not the law but is a good idea.
- Apart from being uncomfortable remember that rain will make your brakes less effective, so take care especially when going downhill.
- Keep away from the main national roads - narrow roads with traffic whizzing by belching exhaust fumes in your face does not make for pleasant cycling.
- Be sure to have a sturdy lock and to secure your bicycle if you are leaving it even for a short time.
