Limerick City Walking Tour
1. King John's Castle
King John's CastleNow restored to it's former glory, this 13th century Norman castle includes in its grounds a number of pre-Norman houses, fortifications and siege mines. The visitor centre at the castle tells the story of the city and the native Celts who have lived there for seven centuries, augmented by English, Huguenots and Palatines at various times.
Leave the Castle and proceed down Nicholas St, cross the bridge into Rutland St.
2. The Hunt Museum
A fascinating place, housing a collection of some 2,000 original works of art and antiquity from all periods of the past - from the Stone Age to the Twentieth Century. While particularly well known for its religious works of art there is also a wealth of other material including material from the Celtic Past and the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Continue along Rutland St and Patrick St, turn right into Francis St then left onto Arthur's Quay.
3. Guided Walk of Old Limerick
The Limerick depicted in Angela's Ashes, the autobiography of Frank McCourt, has almost totally disappeared, indeed many residents of the city greatly resented the book and will vigorously contest its view of their beloved city. Nevertheless, those wishing to know more about the city and its history can detour here and take the walking tour, based around locations in the book, which leaves regularly from the Tourist Office on Francis St.
Go back to Patrick St, turn left into Ellen St, then left again into Michael St.
4. The Granary and Limerick Ancestry
The GranaryA real treasure trove for those researching family origins in the area. Unfortunately access to records is limited at present due to lack of funding for staff, but the building itself and the library are worth a visit.
Retrace your step along Michael St, turn right into Mungret St, continue straight along Wickham St and Parnell St until you reach the Railway Station. Turn right into Glentworth St.
5. Pery Square & the People's Park
Pery SquareLimerick lays claim to some of the best Georgian architecture in Ireland and in Pery Square, location of many of the city's best buildings from this period, a fully restored town house and garden, built by The Pery Tontine Company in 1838, can be visited by appointment.
