Miltown Malbay is best known for its annual Summer event held in honour of Willie Clancy, a mecca for traditional musicians of all stripes from around Ireland and indeed the world.
Less well known is its winter weekend of music, dedicated to the concertina. The word Cruinniú means ‘gathering’ and that’s what this is, a gathering of musicians who love the instrument and those who love hearing them make music on it.
There are classes (from absolute beginner up), lectures, concerts, recitals, many sessions and loads of that elusive quantity ‘craic’. You can learn about the concertina, which one to choose and how to repair and maintain it yourself.
Date and details for 2024 subject to confirmation.
While the official concerts will be packed, you don’t need to attend one to enjoy the weekend. Whenever musicians gather in Miltown Malbay you are rarely more than a stone’s throw from informal music sessions.
