OFFline is a somewhat unusual film festival based in Birr, Co Offaly. The festival has at its heart a competition, which requires teams to shoot & edit short films (less than 10 minutes) with a top prize worth €5000 at stake, but just as importantly also a guaranteed slot for the winning filmmakers in the Galway Film Fleadh.
This really does present a stiff challenge to film makers, to produce a film ready for screening in such a short time frame. Filming begins on Friday and the films are screened on Sunday morning with the award ceremony taking place that afternoon. The organisers help by providing locations, some equipment where required and actors – you can get involved by signing up as an extra on the festival website – but I doubt if those competing see a lot of sleep over the weekend!
There is also a short film competition, again with very attractive prizes.
Those not involved can attend workshops on scriptwriting, directing, film editing and more. There is an eclectic range of movies showing during the week, with a different theme each year.
A special children’s strand shows both new and classic kid’s movies.
Each evening is rounded off with music and socialising in the Festival Club.
Date and details for 2023 subject to confirmation.
