The Sligo Jazz Project has two parts: a festival and a school running side by side. There are plenty of performances but also workshops and master classes for aspiring and working jazz musicians who come annually to work with leading international jazz educators and performers.
Since its foundation in 2005 the event has grown rapidly to become one of Europe’s most important jazz education events and one that is loved by both students and tutors – not to mention the audiences who get to hear them play. A nightly festival club is also the scene of some memorable sessions each year.
There are classes for piano, voice, guitar, percussion, trumpet, double bass, sax and more, with students coming from not just Ireland but all over the world.
As you might expect with so many enthusiastic musicians gathered in the same place, the scheduled concerts are only the start of the music – a unique feature of the week are the frequent informal pub sessions featuring summer school participants and tutors alike.
