Waterford or Wexford?

April 23, 2007

Question:

Hi,

First time to Ireland in June, for our last night before heading back to Dublin airport, should we stay in Waterford or Wexford, any recommendations, would like a B&B and close to the town, even if we don’t stay in Waterford, would like to stop there.

Thanks,
Sharon Lyons

Of the two towns I would chose Wexford over Waterford. It’s a lovely place and not quite as busy nor as industrial as Waterford, IMO.

    Hi and welcome!

It’s really a matter of personal choice which you pick, both are pretty much the same distance from Dublin Airport – I would allow about 2hrs 15 mins to get to the Airport from either.

Waterford is the larger of the two, but there is lots of good restaurants, bars and places to see in either one.

If you are planning to be in Ireland before the 17th of June, it may be harder to get accommodation in Wexford as the Opera Festival is on at that time. The town will be pretty much booked out. On the other hand that would also be a great time to visit as there will be so much going on – if you can find somewhere to stay!

I would recommend McMenemin’s Townhouse in Wexford, which is in the town, and The Blue Door is also good.

In Waterford Avondale is a very good B&B and is within walking distance of pretty much everywhere in the city.
